Tokyo (CNN) -- An 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit Japan early Friday, triggering tsunami warnings and sending people fleeing out of buildings in the capital.

The quake rattled buildings and toppled cars off bridges and into waters underneath. In Tokyo, crowds huddled together and tried to reach relatives via cell phone.

Its epicenter was 373 kilometers (231 miles) from Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said.

It triggered a tsunami warning for various countries, including Japan and Russia, the National Weather Service said.

"Earthquakes of this size are known to generate tsunamis potentially dangerous to coasts outside the source region," it said.

In comparison the Indonesian tsunami was a 7.7 this is 11 times more powerful

I just heard this. The cause I think is the Moon. The Moon was supposed to start making close passes to earth, and something chaotic was predicted as a result.

Regardless of it's the moon or not, which the moon I don't think effects the tectonic plates, there's a Nuclear Emergency, since a reactor didn't cool properly, around 200 I believe are confirmed dead, there's multiple fires and a petrochemical plant fire too. So all's not going well.

The world has a lot of fault lines WAY overdue for earthquakes, and I'm assuming this one was one of them. As for the Supermoon theory, that's still a topic of debate, since they have some idea of what the moon affects, but not totally yet, so it could just be bad timing of it happening and totally unrealated to the earthquake

In Japan 200 died already?! To tell you the truth, I would be the type of person to stay on top of a car in order to not drown or anything.

I'm just glad it happened in Japan instead of somewhere else. Realistically, Japan is in the first world, and they're prepared for this kinda stuff, 200 is a lot dead already, but it's nothing in comparision to the some 13 million in Tokyo (Less than a whole percent). If this was in a third world area or an area not prepared such as one of the poorer countries near Japan, the death toll would be much higher, and range into double digit percents for sure.

That doesn't make this any less a tragedy, be it one or one million dead, it's still a tragedy and my heart goes out

More than likely, he's either A) on duty of some sorts, or B) not home. I'd say not to fret, as there haven't been any reports on incidents in San Deigo caused by this

I believe British USAR teams are on standby to assist as well, which I assume would probably be LFB and another force, not sure.

It does make sense to be honest Cressler, Navy and Marines aren't USAR trained as well as them, and may not have all the kit, you can get most Navy and Marines on salvage, but you wouldn't have enough specialist units anyway in Japan.

Plus, Japan would need to ask the U.S. for help THEN the U.S. would send their relief ships or w.e. you call them.

yeah but it's not really a SAR mission is a dead body search anyone that was in those low lying area 9.9 out of 10 are dead a couple might of gotten lucky but if you were under that water you are mostly likely dead or swept out to sea

If you look at it that way, you'll get no work out of anyone. It's a USAR mission, to search for people trapped by the Earthquake, or possibly the Tsunami, though that's unlikely, It's probably not 9.9/10, it's a high, but probably 7/10, but you must be optimistic.
